Artisan glass beads are made using a process known as “lampworking”. Lampwork beads are made out of molten glass using an age old method which has been passed down through generations utilizing original techniques. The lampwork process is very involved and requires sophisticated equipment and manual dexterity. The artist must manipulate a rod of glass with one hand and a mandrel with the other. It takes a great deal of coordination, skill, and practice to be able to produce even the simplest beads. Each handmade glass bead is a miniature work of art, shaped one at a time by the artist. A skillfully turned bead is a true thing of beauty, thought provoking, inspiring a certain level of respect for the artisan that created it. |
